London Cardinals Newsletter: 07.11.11 – Born Yesterday

“Welcome to our wonderful and fantastic club” President, Jessie Macneil-Brown, opened the evening by praising how wonderful London Cardinals is.

Our Toastmaster, Craig Haffey, proclaimed that he was here to support the Toastmaster superstars for the evening, setting the theme –  “Born yesterday.”

Our Timekeeper – Jessica Forster – explained the Timekeeper role, “I’m not here to stop time for you but to ensure you get to the bar on time after meeting”.  Richard Russell, Grammarian, set the word of the evening: ‘satisfy’.

Glen Jones, Table Topics Master, set the evening’s theme of ‘Carry On films’.  Alex Hancock: going to school in a bikini; Maggie Etheridge: would love Sid James in the back of her cab.  Henry Lam: Going to Hong Kong to get away from it all. Jessie Macneil-Brown: “I’m already famous, I will not get out of a taxi if there is not a certain number of paparazzi waiting for me.”  Trang Le: British weather makes her lose her temper.  Kevin Sullivan: “the unexpected frightens me – its always a surprise.”  Sonalini Gunasekera: Having a wild time on a date and forgetting who her date was. Danny Callaghan: being the head of time travel and having a word with Socrates.  Richard Russell: the most disappointing location he has been to.  Denise Tyrell: “Student nurses get the dirtiest jobs.”  Monica Chong: Favourite villain film is No Country for Old Men.  James Gilpin: Being a spy in the Royal household.

Jo Holmes, Table Topics Evaluator, evaluated 12 table topics expertly in the time given.  Sergeant at Arms: Alex Hancock introduced 5 guests to “come up and satisfy our curiosity.”  Laura McCracken videoed the prepared speeches in the second half.

Sonalini Gunasekera, Speech No 2– Cross racial adoption“At the end of the day every child needs to be loved.”

“The passion was just so powerful for a Number 2 speech.”  Denise Tyrell, Evaluator

Jenny Cutler, Advanced Speech, Humorous Speaking Manual – ‘Cultural Differences: UK v USA’ “The difference is huge – they speak a different language to start with”

“I commend Jenny for taking the courage to test the boundaries of this club” Laura McCracken, Evaluator

General Evaluator: Nigel Cutts gave the club and those that had not yet been evaluated some useful feedback, “I love the great buzzy energy in this club!”

Our next meeting – 21.11.11

Hope to see you at the next London Cardinals meeting on Monday 21st November.  We’re in for a treat – with Stephan von Posern as our Toastmaster, James Marshall as our Table Topics Master and a great line up of speeches!  The line up of speeches include a Number 2 from the fabulously entertaining Dara Lanlehin, a Number 3 from our resident Sergeant at Arms Alex Hancock and two advanced speeches from James Marshall and Laura McCracken.  So hope to see you all there!

Gilly Cutts is now overseeing Competent Leaders and encouraging everyone to complete the Competent Leader manual.  Please help Gilly by making sure we have your correct email address.  If you have any questions about competent leadership skills please do not hesitate to contact Gilly or have a chat to her at a meeting.
